Sham Fixed Term Employment Agreements
Fixed term employment agreements are becoming increasingly common in New Zealand. Certain
industries seem to be using them as a substitute for trial periods and to avoid the need for
redundancy processes.
Genuine fixed term agreements are useful to both employers and employees. However, sham
agreements are extremely harmful as they create a precarious employment relationship which is
stressful for employees and their families who depend on a stable income.
There are many ways in which one can spot a sham fixed term agreement. If you suspect that
you are on one or if you just have questions about your fixed term employment agreement, do not
hesitate to contact The Worker’s Advocate.
